Moving From Sydney to the Sunshine Coast: A Planning Guide

To move from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast, book your removalist 4 to 6 weeks ahead, decide between a dedicated truck and a shared load, and send a room-by-room inventory for an accurate quote. Sydney is one of our longest interstate runs, and we do it in both directions. Plenty of people make the move north for a bit more space and a slower pace. Here's how we'd plan the move if it were ours.

Start with your dates

Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead where you can. School holidays and the end of the year are when demand is highest, and they're also when lots of families choose to move, so give yourself more lead time if your move falls then. We move Monday to Saturday, so a Saturday move is an option if weekdays are hard.

Before you ring anyone, work out which dates are fixed and which can flex. Is there a lease end in Sydney? A settlement date on the Coast? A new job or school start? The answer shapes almost every other decision, starting with the kind of truck you need.

Dedicated truck or shared load?

We run two options on the Sydney route.

A dedicated truck carries only your goods. Nothing else is co-loaded, there are no depot transfers, and the same crew that loads you in Sydney unloads you on the Coast. You get definite loading and unloading times and you're contacted on arrival. It's the one we recommend for a full home or a fixed settlement date, and it's how our interstate removals service works.

A backload, or shared load, puts your belongings on a truck with other smaller jobs heading the same way. You pay for the space your things take up, but timing is planned around the combined jobs, so you'll need a window of a few days.

Walk the whole place before you fill it in. Balcony furniture, the storage cage in the basement car park and the bikes in the hallway all take up room. If you're downsizing or upsizing, decide what's coming before you quote. Anything you sell or give away in Sydney is space you don't pay to move.

Sort out access at both ends

Sydney is full of apartments and units, and that's where most of the planning goes on the Sydney side.

• Book the building lift with your body corporate or building manager well before moving day, and follow their rules on lift covers and booked time slots.

• Check the loading zone. Sydney loading zones are often tight and time-restricted. Tell us the details when you book so we bring the right truck and crew.

• Measure tight spots. Narrow doorways, stairwells and hallway corners decide whether a corner lounge goes out in one piece. We can take furniture apart and put it back together.

At the Sunshine Coast end, think about the new place just as carefully. Coastal unit blocks have lift bookings too. Hinterland homes can have long, steep or unsealed driveways, and acreage can mean a long carry from the truck to the house. Let us know about access at both ends and we'll plan for it.

Packing for a long-haul trip

A long trip means your belongings are on the road for a while, so packing matters.

• Start early and pack room by room, labelling every box with the room it's going to.

• Put heavy things in small boxes and light things in big ones.

• Clear out your fridge and washing machine and have them ready on moving day.

• Pack an essentials box for the car: sheets, a change of clothes, chargers, medication, the kettle and pet food.

• Keep documents, valuables and keys with you, not on the truck.

Our crew wraps every piece of furniture in quilted pads and secures the load with lay-flat straps, and delicate items get wrapped inside the house before they go near the truck. Check your insurance

Armstrong Removals holds general freight insurance covering pick-up and set-down of goods. It doesn't include in-transit insurance. Before moving day, ask your home and contents insurer whether your policy covers belongings in transit with a removalist, and arrange transit cover if it doesn't.

Settling in on the Coast

A few Queensland admin jobs are easy to forget once the boxes are open:

• Vehicle registration. If your car will be garaged in Queensland, you have 14 days to register it in Queensland.

• Driver licence. Transfer to a Queensland driver licence within 3 months of living here.

• Address changes. Update your bank, insurer, Medicare, the electoral roll and your mail redirection.
