Backloading vs a Dedicated Truck for Sydney or Melbourne

November 03, 2026•6 min read

A dedicated truck carries only your goods, with definite loading and unloading times, so it suits full homes and fixed dates. A backload shares the truck with other small jobs, so it costs less but works around a window of a few days. For a Sunshine Coast to Sydney or Melbourne move, your load size and how fixed your dates are usually decide it.

When someone rings us about a move to Sydney or Melbourne, one of the first things we ask is how fixed their dates are. It tells us more than almost anything else. We run both options. Here's how they actually differ, without the sales talk.

The dedicated truck

With a dedicated truck, the truck carries only your goods. Nothing else is co-loaded. You get definite loading and unloading times, you're contacted when we arrive at the delivery end, and the same crew that loads you in Noosa or Caloundra unloads you at the other end. No depots and no subcontracted removalists.

It's the one we recommend for a full house, and for anyone with a date they can't move. You can read the full details on our interstate removals page.

The backload

With a backload, your goods share space with other smaller jobs on the same trip. We combine several jobs heading the same way, so each customer pays only for the space they need. It costs less, but loading and unloading are planned around the shared schedule, so you need some give in your dates. Each customer's load is kept separate with dividers, nothing goes through a depot, and we give you two weeks' notice of your pick-up and delivery day.

Same wrapping, same pads, same lay-flat straps. The difference is the timing and the cost, not the care. If you're new to the idea, our post on what backloading is and how it works covers the basics.

Sunshine Coast to Sydney

Sydney is one of our longest interstate runs, and we do it both ways. A couple of typical situations:

A one-bedroom unit, moving for work, with a month's notice and a mate's spare room to crash in. That's a good backload. There isn't enough furniture to justify a truck of your own, and a few days either way doesn't hurt.

A four-bedroom family home, settlement on a Friday, kids starting at a new school the week after. That's a dedicated truck, no question. You need to know exactly when the truck is loading and when it's arriving.

There's more on the run itself on our Sydney removalists page, and if you're coming the other way, read our guide to moving from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast to Melbourne

Melbourne is a long trip whichever way you go. We plan it carefully, working through your inventory well before moving day.

The same logic applies. If you're sending a few rooms down to a rental that's already furnished, or shipping some pieces to family, a backload is worth a look. If you're relocating the whole household and starting a new job on a set date, go dedicated. Our Sunshine Coast to Melbourne page has the details on that route.

Five questions to ask yourself

Before you ring around, it helps to have answers to these:

  1. How much am I really moving? Go room by room. Most people underestimate. Our Detailed Quote form adds up the cubic metres for you.

  2. How fixed is my date? If the answer is "the keys change hands at 10am Friday", that settles it.

  3. Can I cover a gap? Staying with family, a furnished rental or short-term storage can make a backload window easy to live with.

  4. Can someone be home for pick-up and delivery? A shared run needs you, or someone you trust, available inside the window.

  5. What's the budget, honestly? If money is tight and your load is small, the backload is often the smarter spend.

Comparing quotes from other companies

If you get quotes from a few removalists, check you're comparing the same service. A dedicated truck and a shared load are different things, and so is a shared load that goes through a depot and gets handled several times.

Ask each company:

  • Will my goods be the only ones on the truck?

  • Does anything go through a depot or get transferred to another truck?

  • Is the crew employed, or subcontracted?

  • What are the loading and delivery times, in writing?

  • What insurance do you hold, and does it cover goods in transit?

For the record, Armstrong Removals holds general freight insurance covering pick-up and set-down of goods. It doesn't include in-transit insurance, so either way you should check your home and contents policy or arrange transit cover. Our guide to getting the best price on interstate removals goes deeper on comparing like for like.

Our honest take

If you've got a full house and a fixed date, book a dedicated truck and book it 4 to 6 weeks ahead, earlier if it's school holidays or near the end of the year.

If you've got a few rooms and a bit of patience, a backload will usually do the job for less.

If you're somewhere in the middle, ring us or get in touch through our contact page. Tell us your load size and timing and we'll tell you which one we'd pick in your shoes. If you'd like to compare, just ask and we'll quote a backload and a dedicated truck side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Do you move in both directions?

Yes. We move people from Sydney and Melbourne back to the Sunshine Coast too, and the same choice between a shared and a dedicated truck applies.

Can you quote both options so I can compare?

Yes. Ask and we'll quote a backload and a dedicated truck side by side, so you can weigh up cost against timing.

Which option is better for a full house?

Usually a dedicated truck. It carries only your goods, the same crew handles both ends, and you get definite loading and unloading times.

How do I get a price for an interstate move?

Start with a Quick Quote, send a Detailed Quote with your full list, or call 0480 890 300. Interstate moves are priced on application, so the more detail you give us, the more accurate the quote.
